The person in this photograph is probably William Curran [DS.6] of St. Louis although he bears a resemblance to his nephew, William Henry Curran [DS.4.4] of Chicago. The photo was taken by Wilke, 391-393 Blue Island Avenue, Chicago. (year unknown) and was found in a box of photographs in St. Louis in the possession of Bernice Estelle (Horak) Curran [DS.8.3.1S]. The name "William Curran" was written on the back of the photo. |

William [DS.6] was the last child of Denis Curran [D] and Sarah McKinley [S] to be born in Scotland. The census marshal in 1900 was told that William had come to the United States in 1851. When William was about 11 years old, he moved with his parents from Chicago to St. Louis.
According to the census of 1880, William married Ellen Doyle (born in Missouri in year ending 31 May 1858) and had at least one child:
DS.6.1 Edward Curran (born in Missouri circa April 1880)
Considering the year that William [DS.6] ceased to live with his parents and the age of his son, it appears that William [DS.6] married Ellen Doyle circa 1879.
In 1900, William was still employed as a broom maker but was living alone in a rooming house in East St. Louis with no family indicated.
George William Curran [DS.8.3] met his uncle William [DS.6] only once. It was during a visit by William [DS.6] to St. Louis when George William [DS.9.3] "was a little boy" (perhaps circa 1900). George William [DS.8.3] said that William [DS.6] eventually moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.
