James [DS.8] was a broom
maker.1 He worked for Weber, Koenig, the Columbia
Box Company, and possibly other employers.1The people in this photo are (from left to right) John Stein [DS.8.1S], James Joseph Curran [DS.8], and Al Jewson. |
|
Circa 1889, James married Martha Froelke [DS.8S] (b. in IL in Feb 1871; d. c. 1947 in Moro IL) in St. Louis. Her father was William Froelke; her mother was Dora Roelich. William died in the early 20's. Dora died in the late 20's.1 William Froelke was born in Ost Friesland, Germany where he was a farmer. He spoke the Friesland dialect. His grandson, George William Curran [DS.8.3] described it as "almost English". George William [DS.8.3] has been to Friesland and understood the dialect "with some effort".1 Dora Roelich was born in Essen, Germany. She, too, grew up on a farm.1 William and Dora moved from Germany first to Bunker Hill, Illinois, and then to St. Louis, Missouri. Bunker Hill is about 45 miles northeast of St. Louis.1 |

| James [DS.8] reportedly told his son, George William Curran [DS.8.3], that he [DS.8] was eight years old when the Civil War started. That would mean that he had been born in 1852. The information on his death certificate, however, indicates that James [DS.8] was about eight years old when the war ended. | |
