The "Eliza" mentioned in line 18 of the text of the letter above was Daniel's wife
Elizabeth [DS.4S] (my great grandmother). The census of 1880 clarified the phrases "your mother & Marey & Tom" and "Sarah & famley" in the letter. Residing at the same address as Denis [D] in 1880 was his wife Sarah [S], his daughter Mary [DS.9], and his son Thomas [DS.7]. Also at the same address was his daughter Sarah [DS.2], her husband (John Drennan, age 40), and her two children, Mary, age 3 [DS.2.1] and John, age 1 [DS.2.2]. Contrary to the statement in the letter that son James [DS.8] was in "crucisteaney" County, the census of 1880 recorded that James was residing with his parents. I have not yet been able to identify "cruisteaney" County, Illinois. The closest name that I have found is "Christian County", Illinois. |
