Eventually, this baby added more names and became Mary Kathryn "Mae" Curran Healey. The godfather was Mae’s uncle [DS.4.8] (age 19). The godmother was probably Catherine Ryan Curran [DS.4.3S], the wife of Mae’s uncle, George Curran [DS.4.3].

Mae was the oldest surviving daughter of Thomas Curran [DS.4.5] and Molly Finan [DS.4.5S1]. Although the census of 1900 recorded her name as "Mary’, she was called "Mae’ by everybody who knew her.

Mae graduated from St. Pius Grade School in 1909 with class honors in spelling and religion. It was her ambition to go to St. Mary’s High School and then to Normal School, but her parents said she had to stay home and help her mother whose health was not good. This was a lifelong disappointment. She kept house until her sister Laura [DS.4.5.7] finished grade school and cried until her father said she could stay home. Mae then determined that if Laura wouldn’t go to high school, she would. She turned the housework over to Laura (circa 1913) and enrolled in a public high school that had classes all year round. By eighteen, she had finished and enrolled in nurse’s training at Jefferson Park Hospital where she graduated as a registered nurse in June 1918. In the meantime, her mother [DS.4.5S1] had died and Laura [DS.4.5.7] had married John FitzMaurice [DS.4.5.7], who then became part of the Curran household. Mae went to work for the Chicago Health Department and continued working there until her death.

The photo above was taken on 25 June 1919, the day of the marriage of Mary "Mae" Kathryn Curran (25 Aug 189622 Apr 1945) to Edward John Healey (1 Mar 189414 Jul 1980) at Sacred Heart Church in Chicago. Mae had first met Ed Healey when he was the person who regularly delivered soft drinks to the Curran Buffet.

The bride is on the right. The bridesmaid sitting in the center is Mae's sister (my mother), Laura Margaret Curran (21 May 18992 Oct 1971), who was married herself in July 1919.

The groom is the taller man standing closest to the bride. I have not yet learned the identity of the other man in the photo. I presume that he is the best man. However, Mae's daughter, Sister Mary Healey, is unable to identify him.

I believe that the photograph was taken with black and white film but given the sepia color by aging. Sister Mary said that my mother's dress was pink; I presume that the bride's dress was white.

Ruth Healey, a sister of the groom, once told Sister Mary a story about Mae's wedding: The florist made a mistake. He was supposed to make a big white bouquet for Mae and a smaller pink one for Laura. He got the orders mixed and tiny Laura had a big bunch of pink while the bride's bouquet was disproportionately small. Just before the wedding, Mike Finan, the maternal grandfather of the bride, showed up with a bunch of white roses in hand. Lena Mattes Healey (who was serving both as bride's mother and groom's) took the second white bouquet and stuck it in the middle of the first thereby doubling its size. That's what Mae carried.

It appears that both bouquets are in the photograph although we cannot see the colors.

Another wedding story: Tom Curran (18 Nov 186812 Nov 1928), the bride's widower father, coincidentally arrived at the church at the same time as the groom's widowed mother. At Tom's suggestion, they sat together rather than sitting alone on opposite sides of the center aisle of the church. While they were together, Tom told Lena that he and his bride, Mary Finan (18 Mar 187214 Feb 1918), walked to church because they could not even afford a "bicycle built for two". In fact, Tom borrowed $20 to get married (in 1888) and Mary Finan borrowed a dress from Tom's sister Sarah (23 Jul 1862c. 1937).

After her marriage, Mae ceased to be a part of the Curran household.

She entered the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 Sep 1949, at the age of 18, and became Sister Mary Healey, B.V.M..  Most of her life, she was a teacher in elementary schools

Mae was fearful when she went to the hospital for a gall bladder operation because her mother had died after an operation at about the same age. In fact, Mae died of a heart attack shortly after her operation.

Mae died on 22 April 1945 and was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery.
