"Matie" (with "a" pronounced as in "ace") is a phonetic variation of "Mary". Smith McClevey [DS.4.1S] had a sister named Matie who was a school teacher. She was probably the first person in the extended Curran family to have that name. Everyone bearing the name "Matie" was actually baptized Mary. But, in school, Matie Loretta Curran [DS.4.7.1] would not answer when she was addressed as Mary. Her sister Grace Curran Sweeney [DS.4.7.6] commented, "That was another bully Curran." The day before Matie's operation in April 1980, Grace said to Matie, "You're a bully. You were told to go two years ago." Matie [DS.4.7.1] married Tom Kinsella and had one child, which died at birth. Matie [DS.4.7.1] and Tom moved to Dunedin (adjacent to Clearwater), FL. Tom died in Jan 1954. Matie's address in Florida
was Following her operation in Apr 1980, Matie [DS.4.7.1] moved to Westfield, Wisconsin to be with her sister Alice [DS.4.7.8]. |

Jeanette was called Jennie or Jen. She married John Quirk [DS.4.7.3S] (22 May 1902—Nov 1961) who was probably related to Lt. Col. James Quirk who served in the 23rd Illinois Infantry with George Curran [DS.1]. Jeanette and John Quirk [DS.4.7.3S] had two children: DS.4.7.3.1 Ruth I. Quirk (20 Dec 1921—22
Apr 1989) DS.4.7.3.2 Jean M. Quirk (7 Jul 1924—Feb
1989) My mother [DS.4.5.7] wrote Jeanette a letter sometime in March of 1954 asking her whether she had a photograph (previously in the possession of Malinda [DS.4.7S]) of Mae [DS.4.5.6], Laura [DS.4.5.7], and Nellie [DS.4.5.8] Curran as young girls. Jeanette never learned of the letter but Grace Sweeney did. Grace brought the picture to Jen's wake and gave it to my mother [DS.4.5.7]. My sister Veronica now has the photograph. I have distributed copies of this wonderful picture via e-mail. Nellie [DS.4.5.8], in thinking of that picture, said, " I always told my kids how pretty I was." |

Robert James
Curran [DS.4.7.4]was called Rob by his siblings and parents but was called
Bob by his friends and acquaintances. When Bob [DS.4.7.4] was a young
boy, he always hung around with his cousin (my uncle) Sharkey
[DS.4.5.10]. Jim Curran [DS.4.7] often said that he was offered
money from soap companies for a picture that he had of Bob and
Sharkey together. I have been unable to find a copy of that photo.
The photo to the right shows Robert [DS.4.7.4] in 1905 when he won the "Most Beautiful Baby" contest. Bob worked as a "streetcar man" for the Chicago Surface Line (CSL). After streetcars were phased out, the CSL became part of the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and then Bob drove a bus. He was a member of Division No. 241, Chicago Transit Authority. During the summer months, Bob also worked as a bricklayer. Bob [.DS.4.7.4] died Monday 13 June 1966 and was buried in Queen of Heaven Cemetery in the Chicago area. Bob [DS.4.7.4] married Josephine Krejci (which means Taylor) (16 Jan 1906—13 Mar 1997) on 20 Jun 1925 and had 5 children.
The photo above shows the five children in late 1947 or early 1948. From left to right, they are Irene [DS.4.7.4.1], Malinda [DS.4.7.4.5], Phyllis [DS.4.7.4.4], Janet [DS.4.7.4.3], and Robert, Jr. [DS.4.7.4.2]. |

Grace was the sixth child of Jim Curran and Minnie Harper (Curran). Her father [DS.4.7] wanted her to be named Sarah after his sister [DS.4.1] but her sister Matie [DS.4.7.1], who was then 17 years old, wanted her to be named Grace. So she [DS.4.7.5] was baptized Grace Sarah Curran. At confirmation, Grace took the middle name Elizabeth after her grandmother, Elizabeth Payne (Curran) [DS.4S]. Thereafter, Grace always signed her name as Grace E. Curran. Marriage On 30 Jun 1934, Grace [DS.4.7.6] married Martin F. Sweeney [DS.4.7.6S] (24 Feb 1910 25 Jan 1988), a glazier for the Chicago Park District. They had no children. Stories Grace Curran [DS.4.7.6] went to a public school although her siblings all attended St. Pius School. Grace had the impression that her uncle Tom [DS.4.5] was mad at St. Pius and that it carried over to her father [DS.4.7]. Jim would not let her go in the other direction to Sacred Heart because she would have had to cross a railroad track. When Grace [DS.4.7.6] started work for the telephone company (one week before she got married) she was paid $15 per week. Grace said, "The going rate was 7 and 8 dollars a week for a girl to get a job anyplace". Marty Sweeney [DS.4.7.6S] recalled applying for a job in a foundry during the depression. It was at Ashland and 16th or Blue Island and 16th. Marty [DS.4.7.6S] was told that the job paid 10 cents an hour. He [DS.4.7.6S] replied: "You don't want me Buddy. Good-bye. I can steal more than that." Grace [DS.4.7.6] and Marty [DS.4.7.6S] were of great help to me in supplying information about the Curran and Harper families. When I interviewed them circa 1980, they resided at 5349 S. Kildare Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60632. I believe that Grace was still at that address in July 1997. I know that she still had the same telephone number (except for a new area code). In July 1997, she was suffering from macular degeneration and had to use a flashlight when reading. |
