| Harold always called himself
Harry and was known as Harry or Sharkey to his friends. My father
[DS.4.5.7S], who lived in the Curran household for about five
years, always referred to him as Sharkey. The nickname, "Sharkey",
was the result of a comparison of Harry to Joseph Paul Zukauskas (26 Oct 1902—17
Aug 1994), a well
known, professional boxer who fought under the name Jack Sharkey. [The
ring name of Jack Sharkey was taken from the first name of Jack Dempsey
and the surname of an Irish boxer, Thomas J. Sharkey (26 Nov 1873—17
Apr 1953).] When Harry [DS.4.5.10] was a young boy, he always hung around with his cousin, Bob Curran [DS.4.7.4], the son of his uncle, Jim Curran [DS.4.7]. Jim often said that he was offered money from soap companies for a picture that he had of Bob [DS.4.7.4] and Harry [DS.4.5.10] together. Harry [DS.4.5.10] never attended high school. His education started at Sacred Heart School in Chicago and ended at Komenski School which was also located in Chicago but to the east of Sacred Heart. Circa 22 April 1922, Harry [DS.4.5.10] married his childhood friend, Rosalind Schnurmacher (born in Chicago on 14 January 1905; died 25 Sep 1990.). As a child, she lived at 954 20th Street (now called Cullerton Street) in Chicago. Rosalinds father was Henry Schnurmacher. Henry was born in November in Germany near the Bohemian border. Henrys mother was called Rose. Henry had a brother named Carl and six sisters named Bertha, Rose, Hermina, Charlotte, Frances, and Marie. Rosalinds mother was named Mary Roubal. Mary was born in December. Marys mother was named Josephine. Mary had just one sibling, a sister named Frances. Harry [DS.4.5.10] and Rosalind had one child, a daughter named Ruth Curran [DS.4.5.10.1] (b. 30 Nov 1922; d. 1 Aug 2001 in Fox AR) Ruth Curran [DS.4.5.10.1] married John Joseph Kosik in Sacred Heart Church in Chicago. John Kosik (b. 1 June 1919in Chicago IL; d. 15 Jan 2002 in Fox AR) worked for the Bethlehem Steel Company in Chicago until he retired. |

| Sharkey [DS.4.5.10] held many different jobs
including some political appointments. His nephew, Edward William
Healey [DS.4.5.6.1] recalled that Sharkey once worked on a County
or State surveyor's gang. During part of the prohibition era,
he worked in a brewery making beer. He spent some time in jail
but my only knowledge of the details comes from my sister Loretta. Harry was her godfather at her baptism in January 1922 and attended
her birthday party when she was in the fourth grade. Although
she was only a small child with big ears, she has a feeling that
Harrys incarceration was in the middle of that period,
perhaps around 1925. Piecing together fragments of childhood
memories of overheard conversations, Loretta thinks that boats
from Canada were unloading liquor at various points along the
Atlantic coast and that the cargo was then transported by trucks
to local distributors. Harry was apparently arrested in New Jersey
when he was driving such a truck with its illegal cargo. He was
sent to a federal penitentiary for a year or two. The stint in jail apparently reformed Harry. There is no record or rumor of him ever again breaking any laws. However, this addition to his resume probably helped him get some preference in assignments from the bartenders union. He traveled with the tracks. He was always head bartender at the tracks. He also worked at the Stevens and other prime assignments in downtown Chicago. Harry was a bartender throughout his working life and was still a bartender when he died in 1968 at the age of 64. When my brother, Father Terence, was in high school, our uncle Harry got him a Summer job selling orangeade in the stands at Arlington Park, Washington Park, and Soldiers Field. Father Terence told me that Harry also touted horses. Harry predicted the winner of any race for any customer who asked. If the horse won, then Harry received a share of the winnings. By predicting (for different customers) different winners for the same race, Harry received some income from every race. |
| DEATH His sister, Ellen Curran Cahill [DS.4.5.9], said that Harold [DS.4.5.10] died on 24 May 1968. |
