George [DS.4.5.2] was an attorney and Judge of the Circuit Court. Nellie [DS.4.5.9] recalled that when her brother George [DS.4.5.2] started his study of law, his father [DS.4.5] said, "It looks like we’ll have another Philpot in the family." She remembered the statement even though she never understood the reference until I explained it to her in Nov 1979.

Of the 100 people listed together with George on the same page of the 1920 census record, a large majority listed their birthplace as Russia and their mother tongue as "Jewish". Occupations were predominantly white collar.

When George’s father, Tom Curran [DS.4.5], was appointed by Gov. Small to the West Parks board on 27 July 1923, George [DS.4.5.2] became the board’s attorney.

My earliest memory of my uncle George [DS.4.5.2] is his Christmas present for my mother. Every Christmas during the early 1930’s, her brother George [DS.4.5.2], sent her a crate of oranges. The children all looked forward to the gift. This largess ended in 1942 when my mother received a card from George [DS.4.5.2] saying that he was going to discontinue sending Christmas cards and Christmas presents in order that he would be able to give all available resources to the war effort.

George [DS.4.5.2] was a friend of his brother-in-law, Edward John Healey [DS.4.5.6S], and did any legal work required by the Healey family. George [DS.4.5.2] also handled the legal work for the first house closing of his nephew, Edward William Healey [DS.4.5.6.1].

So far as I know, the only time I ever saw George [DS.4.5.2] was at my father’s funeral in 1954. He was telling another man with astonishment that despite my mother’s choice of a husband and their financial circumstances, one of their children was a physicist, one was in medical school, and one was teaching at Georgetown University. George’s summary comment was "You just never know."

MARRIAGE
Circa 1917, George [DS.4.5.2] married Mabel Conroy (b. 1890) and had two sons, George A. Curran, Jr. [DS.4.5.2.1] (27 Oct 1918--25 Mar 2001) and Francis Xavier Curran [DS.4.5.2.2] (born circa 1921). Mabel’s father was born in Ireland; her mother was born in the U.S. I have been told by my sister [DS.4.5.7.6] that Mabel never had any contact with the FitzMaurice family when she could avoid it.

George, Jr. [DS.4.5.2.1] entered the Society of Jesus on 1 Sep 1938 and was ordained a priest on 13 Jun 1951. He then became Reverend George A. Curran, S. J.    In 1979, he was teaching political science at Xavier University in Cincinnati.  Father George died on 25 Mar 2001.

Francis Xavier Curran [DS.4.5.2.2], an attorney, was deceased by 1979.

DEATH
His sister Nellie told me that George died in Sep 1971 although the Social Security Death Index gives the date as Aug 1971.
