Nellie was just 14 days short of her 16th birthday when her mother [DS.4.5.7S1] died. Nellie recalled that she had been planning for a "sweet sixteen" party.

Nellie [DS.4.5.9] entered nurse’s training circa 3 Jan 1920. She "had aspirations to be a Surgical Supervisor" but her hearing was "bad". To Nellie, this meant that she might not hear the words of the surgeon and that a patient might suffer as a result. Hence, her commitment to nursing began to wane.

Nellie met her future husband, Kyran John Cahill [DS.4.5.9S], early in 1920 at a party given at the house of Lena Mattes Healey, the mother-in-law of Nellie’s sister Mae [DS.4.5.6]. Nellie dropped out of nurse’s training on 8 Feb 1922. That irritated her sister Mae [DS.4.5.6]. Mae told Nellie that the man would wait if he were any good and that Nellie would need a job skill to fall back on in case Kyran [DS.4.5.9S] were ever unable to support her.

But love triumphed over sisterly advice and Nellie married Kyran John Cahill in Chicago on 8 Feb 1922. Nellie and Kyran had 11 children: Thomas, Mary, Kyran Jr., Walter, William, Geraldine, Margaret Ellen, Jack, Robert, Norinne, and Michael.

 

Death

Nellie [DS.4.5.9] died on 3 Aug 1984.
