Ellen Elizabeth Veronica "Nell" Curran (Harper) [DS.4.2]

This photograph (taken circa 1890) shows Nell on the left and her younger sister Mollie on the right. Nell was about seven years older than Mollie.

Birth
According to her daughter Mildred, Ellen was born 9 Dec 1863 in Chicago. Although the priest neglected to record the date of birth in the baptismal record for Ellen Elizabeth "Nell" Curran (Harper) [DS.4.2], the recorded date of birth of her sister Sarah [DS.4.1] together with the date of baptism of Nell give credibility to the birth date of 9 Dec 1863 remembered by Nell's sixth child, Mildred Margaret Harper (Mininni).

As time passed, Ellen [DS.4.2] apparently subtracted five years from her age. Her death certificate said that she had been born on 9 Dec 1868.

"Edward & Maggie Pain", the godparents of Ellen Elizabeth "Nell" Curran (Harper), were probably Edward Payne (age 10) and Margaret Payne (age 7), both of whom were children of William Payne [W] by his second marriage.

The best man (age 20) was a brother of the groom. The bridesmaid (age 17) was a sister of the bride. The best man and the bridesmaid were married (to each other) about two years later.

 

The photo at the right was taken circa 1925. It shows Nell Curran Harper (center) together with her husband, Will Harper, their daughter, Libby Harper Nicks [DS.4.2.1] and grandchildren, Bill Nicks [DS.4.2.1.3] (left) and Ben Nicks [DS.4.2.1.2] (right).

Upon encountering Grace Sweeney with one of Grace’s boyfriends, Nell said, "Is this the Jew or the Dutchman?" Grace said, "Nell was a character".
